Secaucus Woman Feels Right at Home at K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch
Clifton/Woodland Park, NJ, September 2014: “From the minute I pulled in, it felt really special. It just felt like home.” That’s how retired hospital patient advocate Karol Schackner described her feelings upon first visiting K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch Spa and Club in Passaic County. Privately tucked away and nicely removed from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life, yet conveniently close to all major highways, K. Hovnanian’sÒFour Seasons at Great Notch has become one of North Jersey’s most successful active-adult lifestyle neighborhoods.
Schackner and her husband lived for over thirty years in their Secaucus condo and were familiar with K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch. “We had driven by many times,” Karol said. “We often came up this way to shop in and around Wayne, so we would pass by and often said, ‘Gee, it looks so pretty up there!’ We were getting to a point where we were in our late-60s and thought it looked like it could be a nice place to retire. But we weren’t totally ready to leave our condo yet. I was still working in Secaucus and he was working in Paramus. We weren’t ready for a change, so we never came to look at it.”
Karol’s husband passed away in June 2012 and shortly after, some changes occurred at her workplace, which made her begin to think that maybe it was time for a change. “I realized it was time for me to retire and to move on,” Karol reflected. “Plus, I had our three-bedroom duplex that I didn’t need and didn’t want to keep up anymore. But I wanted to stay in this general area. My son and daughter-in-law and their children live in Bergen County, and my daughter is on Long Island, so I wanted it to be easy to get to them. So I finally came up to Great Notch and looked around.”
Karol’s first impression of K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch was a lasting one, as it is for many active-adult homebuyers. Set in a picturesque mountain rock quarryand surrounded by majestic cliffs, with spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline, the community offers an appealing combination of beautifully designed, spacious homes in a tranquil setting, with resort-style amenities, and a highly convenient location only 12 miles from New York City.
“It feels like a resort up here, by the quarry. It’s such a beautiful setting. But besides being such a beautiful place to live, everyone was so welcoming and made me feel so comfortable,” Karol continued. “I went into the sales office and met Kim and Laurie. They were wonderful – just super people. This was only a few months after my husband had passed, so it was very special. They treated me like they knew me forever and they were really like family. They were so encouraging, so patient and so helpful through the whole process, and I really needed that, being alone.”
Karol looked at one other community in the area but, as she explained, it didn’t quite compare to K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch. “When I walked into the clubhouse and models at the other place, it was a night-and-day difference from Great Notch,” she said. “I looked at some places on Long Island, too, because my daughter wanted me to be closer to her. But nothing compared to Great Notch. I can’t explain it. They were just not the same. I said to my daughter, ‘Please come see it’ – and once she did, she said, ‘Mom, I understand!’”
At K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch, buyers can choose from a variety of luxurious home designs, with floorplans that appeal to almost every type of active adult, including attractive villa, garden, and courtyard homes, priced from the low-$400s (prices subject to change). Each home is thoughtfully planned, offering from 1,426 to 2,907 square feet of beautifully designed living space, including two or three bedrooms and up to three full baths. Karol Schackner purchased a Begonia model, which she found just perfect for her needs. “The inside layout and everything is so conducive, whether you are alone or a couple,” she commented. “It’s the perfect size. And I like having a garage to pull into. I feel very safe here.”
Karol moved into her new home in October 2013 – and the experience has been profound for her. “I cannot tell you what this move has done for me,” she shared. “I knew one person who lived here before I moved in and she loved it. She told me, ‘Karol, you’re not going to believe how wonderful it is.’ And she was right! I can’t even find the words to describe how wonderful it really is. I have met so many people and never have I met people who are so sweet. When I moved in, there was a little scroll at my door with an invitation from neighbors upstairs to come up for a cocktail party. Since then, we get together for progressive dinners and other things in our building. I have made all different types of lifetime friends here in such a short period of time. And there’s always something to do. I’ve never done so much before!”
K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch is indeed an active community, offering a vast array of resort-style amenities and activities for homeowners. A magnificent 25,000-square-foot clubhouse includes indoor and outdoor pools, tennis and bocce courts, a putting green, billiards, card and craft rooms, and a fitness center, providing residents with a variety of recreational and social lifestyle opportunities that are simply unsurpassed in the area.
“I feel like I’m at summer camp!” Karol said, laughing. “I love it here! I feel so much younger again. I wake up in the morning and go over to exercise. You walk into the clubhouse and everyone talks to you and greets you with arms wide open. ‘How are you? What are you doing? Do you want to go to a movie or dinner?’ I went from 37 years of never being alone when I was married, to suddenly being alone after my husband passed. But here, I never feel alone. There are parties, clubs to join, trips, bingo, shows, just so many wonderful things to be done. And they also include grandchildren in activities and events, which is great. I have five grandchildren, including one brand-new one who was born in July, and they love coming here.”
It’s pretty clear that Karol Schackner is more than just a cheerleader or ambassador for her new community. She is someone who has had a truly life-changing experience as a result of moving to K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch. “This place really gave me a whole new life,” she shared. “Now when new people move in, I wave and go up to them to introduce myself. I want them to have the same experience I’ve had. I feel like I’m being hugged everyday here.”
