River Drive Construction Completes $3.6 Million Facility for Ocean Health Initiatives in Lakewood, N.J.
New Healthcare Facility Celebrates Grand Re-Opening; Will Receive “New Good Neighbor Award”
River Drive Construction, a leading New Jersey construction company based in Elmwood Park, N.J., has announced that it has recently completed a $3.6 million construction project for the Ocean Health Initiatives (OHI) Lakewood Health Center, a health center providing care for people who are either uninsured or underinsured.
Serving as the general contractor for the project, River Drive Construction constructed a two-story, 16,000-square-foot facility at 101 Second St. in Lakewood, N.J., which was built on top of the existing 9,000-square-foot OHI building. The new facility houses an 8,000-square-foot obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics wing that includes 20 examination rooms and an administrative area.
“We’re thrilled to announce the completion of the OHI Lakewood facility,” said Joseph Langan, president of River Drive Construction. “This project means healthcare services for thousands of people who otherwise couldn’t afford it. The OHI team was a pleasure to work with – they were acutely aware of the project’s challenges, and their trust in us helped them make quick and efficient decisions.”
The greatest challenge of the project was to conduct the work without interrupting day-to-day operation in the existing facility, he added.
Ocean Health Initiatives, which has two other sites in Ocean County, provides quality and affordable primary, dental, pediatric and obstetrics/gynecology medical care, as well as comprehensive social services to address a range of patient needs.
OHI recently hosted a grand re-opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Lakewood facility, which was attended by national, state and local politicians, including U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, U.S. Congressman Christopher Smith, N.J. Sen. Robert W. Singer and Lakewood Mayor Menashe Miller.
In addition to celebrating the new facility, the event highlighted the success of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s Facility Investment Program, which provided OHI with $4.7 million in funding, part of which funded the Lakewood, N.J. project. OHI was one of only four healthcare centers in New Jersey to receive federal funding from this program.
“I am so proud to be a part of this re-opening at Ocean Health Initiatives, an organization of health care champions who work hard every day to provide care for anyone who comes through their doors,” said Menendez. “Ocean Health Initiative was doing great work before these renovations, so I am excited to see how many more people they will effectively serve with this larger space.”
Healthcare construction is one of River Drive’s specialties. The firm recently completed a 2,000-square-foot CAT scan facility at Paramus Medical Center in Paramus, N.J., and a 4,000-square-foot plastic surgery suite including a state-certified operating room at Advanced Aesthetics in Verona, N.J. River Drive also specializes in industrial/retail, food services, corporate interior, science/technology and legal/financial construction.
“Thanks to River Drive Construction, this very difficult project was completed on time, within budget and with minimal disruption to our existing facility, over which the new facility was built,” said Dr. Theresa Berger, Chief Executive Officer of OHI. “With our new facility, we’re able to broaden our service hours, increase our ability to see more patients annually and add to existing primary care services.”
The Lakewood, N.J., OHI facility is also the winner of a New Jersey Business and Industry Association “2012 New Good Neighbor Award," which honors projects based on economic benefit/job creation, architectural merit and community involvement. The project will be honored at a luncheon on Friday, June 1, in Edison, N.J.
