River Drive Construction Building New Showroom for Morris Brick and Stone in Morristown, N.J.
Ridgedale Avenue Retail Structure Will Celebrate History of Family-Owned Business

Morristown's thriving retail artery, Ridgedale Avenue, will soon become the home of a building slated to become the new showroom for the Morris Brick and Stone Co., a family-owned supplier of masonry and landscaping materials. The building, at 94 Ridgedale Ave., is being built by Elmwood Park, N.J.-based River Drive Construction.

The new, two-story, 3,500-square-foot brick-faced building, which will include a showroom as well as warehouse and overhead storage space is being built in the federal style to reflect Morristown's colonial heritage -- the city served as Washington's headquarters from 1779 through 1780 -- as well as the business's deep ties to its Morris County seat, where it has been located since 1936.

"We're delighted to be working on this project for a number of reasons," said Joseph Langan, president of River Drive Construction. "First is the quality of the building: Morris Brick and Stone has chosen a design with great elegance and style; and second is the opportunity to work with a business with such deep roots in the community: it isn't often that we get to work with a family-owned business that goes back more than 75 years."

The company was founded by Morris Goldberg and is now headed by his son, Herb Goldberg, who serves as president. Two of Herb Goldberg's sons, Todd and Mark, also work in the business.

"Our goal is to build the nicest building on the block, which we hope will set a new standard for Ridgedale Avenue," Todd Goldberg said of the building. "Our business is continuing to grow, and with this building we hope to stay competitive for many years to come."

River Drive Construction was chosen because of its experience in building retail structures, as well as its expertise in construction in accordance with N.J. Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regulations, a result of the fact the property borders the Whippany River. Another consideration was River Drive's experience in masonry applications: the detailed stone and brickwork is designed to show off the company's product line.

"River Drive has precisely the experience our company was looking for," said Goldberg. "Which is great because it frees up our time to do what is most important to us, which is to provide outstanding service to our customers."

In addition to general construction and ground-up projects such as Morris Brick and Stone, River Drive provides construction and consulting services to developers, management companies, end users and corporations in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania in sectors including interiors, science and technology, hospitality, institutional, healthcare and retail.

"One of the main benefits of the new building is it will be visible to the 27,000 cars a day which travel Ridgedale Avenue, thus driving retail traffic." Todd Goldberg said. The business' primary location is currently located behind the Open Road Mazda car dealership at 108 Ridgedale Avenue.

"Three or four times a week a customer says, 'I've lived in the area all my life and I didn't know you were here.' said Todd Goldberg. "The new building will give us roadway exposure to all the eyes traveling Ridgedale Avenue every day. Also, the new warehouse space will allow us to fabricate a wider variety of special orders for our customers."

The new building will be located on a site which has been in the family since the 1940s. 94 Ridgedale Avenue was formerly the home of Morris and Mollie Goldberg, the company's founders. Morris Goldberg, who originally was a demolition contractor, got into the brick and stone business as a result of saving building materials he recovered from demolition jobs.

"To commemorate this history, and to celebrate the continuity of the family business, the new building will include bricks which were recovered from the original house," Todd Goldberg said.

"We've been able to expand the business and develop this property because of the hard work and long hours my grandparents put in over the years," said Todd Goldberg. "By including bricks from their home in the new building, we will be able to tie 94 Ridgedale Avenue back to the history of our family, which is very important to us."

Construction began in July and is on schedule for completion by the end of the year. The architect is Jeff Rawding of F.J. Rawding AIA Architectural Design & Planning in Morristown.
