New York Couple Trade in Crowds and Home Repairs for Relaxing New Lifestyle Near the Beach

Little Egg Harbor, NJ, January 2015: Carole Sohn dreamed of the day when she could live near the beach again. Living in Rockland County, New York, where she and Howard Dinowitz had been for 15 years, they were used to a lot of traffic, a lot of crowded stores and restaurants, a lot of home repairs and maintenance – but not a lot of opportunities to be on the beach.

“I used to go to Cape May for weekends and I also lived at the beach in Rockaway Park,” Carol reminisced. “I always wanted to go back, but felt like I would probably never live near the beach again.” Much to her delight, Carole was wrong – and today, she and Howard are living their dream, at K. Hovnanian’sÒ Four Seasons at Harbor Bay, a popular 55+ community in Little Egg Harbor that offers an active, resort-like lifestyle near the Jersey Shore. Carole explained how they ended up at the thriving Ocean County community.

“It was time for a change. I was ready. We had a lot of property and maintenance on our home, but Howie never minded doing all the work. Then one day he turned around and said, ‘I’m tired of all this!’ I was waiting for him to say this! My daughter, who lives in a K. Hovnanian® community in Edgewater, knew how much I wanted to be near the beach. So one day she said, ‘K. Hovnanian® has communities near the water. You should check them out.’ So we went online and found K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Harbor Bay. The location was great because it was near the beach and also not too far from some of my children and grandchildren in New Jersey and New York. And we wanted a single-family home, not a townhome or an apartment, so the homes were ideal.”

Located just fifteen minutes from Long Beach Island, the private, gated community offers a choice of six distinct home designs, nicely priced from the high-$200s (prices are subject to change). The single-level homes feature up to 2,900 square feet of living space, with up to three bedrooms, three baths, and attached two-car garages – without all the maintenance that Carole and Howard had been accustomed to. Many buyers also appreciate the taxes, which are substantially lower than active-adult communities in other parts of the state or in New York.

Carole and Howard chose a spacious St. Simon model, which they moved into this past October. “This is one of the larger models and it had all the space we needed,” Carole shared. “We have four married children and seven grandchildren living in northern New Jersey, New York, Maryland and North Carolina. So we wanted a lot of space for them to be able to come and stay with us. We hosted our family for Christmas and had a whole houseful. Everything worked out perfectly!”

It wasn’t just the location or the homes that appealed to Carole and Howard. “We looked at another community in Barnegat,” Carole recalled, “but there was just a different feeling when we visited here. Everyone we met was really excited to be here! And it’s a newer community, so everything felt fresh. This place is immaculate – they keep it up so well. The grounds are taken care of and the clubhouse is fantastic, where at the other community it was older and a little shoddy. Everything always looks so ‘spic and span’ here and we were really impressed with that.”

The magnificent two-story Clubhouse and Recreation Center is truly one of the most appealing features of K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Harbor Bay. This 16,000 square-foot, seashore-inspired facility is the heart of the neighborhood, offering a variety of recreational and social amenities. The clubhouse features indoor and outdoor pools, sun decks, a fitness center, spa, billiards and craft rooms, tennis, bocce, horseshoes and more. The facility was voted “Clubhouse of the Year”in 2011 by the New Jersey Shore Builder's Association.

“The clubhouse was really a big factor in our decision to move here,” Carole said. “I play Mahjongg and poker and Howard shoots pool. Our grandchildren have played in the indoor pool and some of the older ones shot some pool with Howie and me. There’s something going on here almost every weekend. We went to a Halloween costume party and a New Year’s Eve party, which were great. It’s very nice because we get to meet people and that was also one of the main reasons we wanted to move. Our house in New York was kind of in the woods and no one was around much. Here, there are always people around. Even if you just go out for a walk you’ll see someone. We’ve gotten acquainted with some of our neighbors and were invited to several holiday parties. It’s very nice.”

Quietly located amidst the natural beauty of Great Bay, Little Egg Harbor offers the ideal setting for such a lovely community. Conveniently located near some of the Jersey Shore’s best beaches, K. Hovnanian’sÒ Four Seasons at Harbor Bay is tucked away from all the hustle and bustle, yet remarkably close to the Garden State Parkway and other major highways. The community offers easy access to plenty of outstanding dining, entertainment and shopping choices. The Sea Oaks Golf Club, a championship 18-hole public golf course, is adjacent to the community. Boating, fishing, great marinas, historic lighthouses, sun-drenched beaches – all of these wonderful amenities are just minutes away.

“We didn’t know anything about this area at all,” Carole commented. “But people told us it was very convenient, which is exactly what we’ve found. Everything is very close and it’s so much less crowded than what we were used to in New York! We’ll go to Costco or other stores and we’re amazed – it’s like, where are all the people? There are no crowds! We also discovered the Lizzie Rose Music Room in Tuckerton and have seen two performances there, which is very nice.”

All in all, Carole and Howard have been thrilled with their new home and their change in lifestyle. “This has been such a positive experience in every way,” Carole summed up. “Everyone we spoke to and worked with here has been so nice. Joan, our sales associate, was absolutely a doll. She couldn’t have been more cooperative. We love it here. This move has fulfilled all our expectations.”
