New Affordable Housing Breaks Ground in Somerset, N.J.

DMR Architects Designs Residences for Genesis Companies and Central Jersey Community Development Corporation

DMR Architects, a leading full-service architectural firm dedicated to redeveloping and revitalizing communities celebrated the groundbreaking of Independence Crossing, an affordable housing complex in Somerset, N.J. on Nov. 29. Independence Crossing, developed in partnership between Genesis Companies and the Central Jersey Community Development Corporation, will provide affordable housing to seniors and veterans.

DMR Architects designed the 64-unit mixed-use, residential complex, which will also provide 11,000 square feet of office space. Independence Crossing is located on a 2.3 acre site at the entrance of the Hamilton Business District at 630 Franklin Blvd. The design includes a resident community room, lobby, laundry facilities and passive outdoor plaza area, including a community garden, in addition to residential units ranging from 650 square feet to 1,050 square feet.

“In the spirit of our firm’s commitment to redevelopment and revitalization, we are proud to provide our services to supply affordable housing. We are proud to work alongside Genesis and the Central Jersey Community Development Corporation during this project,” Obi Agudosi, Senior Vice President and Principal, said.

“The design team collaborated with the Township and Hamilton Business District on elements of the project. We worked closely to make sure the new project would blend aesthetically and foster growth and continuity within the community,” Kurt Vierheilig, Senior Designer and Project Architect, said. “We look forward to ongoing construction of the building and the benefits the project will bring to the Township.”

Genesis Companies is a real estate, development and construction firm focused on urban redevelopment. Genesis is developing Independence Crossing in partnership with Central Jersey Community Development Corporation (CJCDC), a non-profit organization committed to improving communities throughout New Jersey. An expansion of the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, the CJCDC provides resources for affordable housing, financial literacy, family support and job training, among others.

"It has been a pleasure to work with DMR Architects since the inception of this project," Karim A. Hutson, Founder and Managing Partner of Genesis Companies, stated. "Genesis is committed to strong community and business partnerships, and we are pleased to have a partner like DMR who shares our dedication to high quality, environmentally-sustainable redevelopment."

Construction completion of Independence Crossing is expected by the end of 2013.
