Mothers-in-Law Become Neighbors at K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at North Caldwell

North Caldwell, NJ, October 2014: It’s an old stereotype that the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom just don’t see eye-to-eye on anything. While there may be some dueling mothers-in-law stories out there, that’s certainly not the case for Mary Dolnik and Diane Fitzsimmons. In fact, these two women are not only co-mothers-in-law, but also new neighbors, after both ladies moved last year to K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at North Caldwell, one of north Jersey’s most popular active-adult lifestyle communities.

For Mary Dolnik, whose daughter is married to Diane Fitzsimmons’ son, it was a matter of finding a new, smaller home in a community closer to her family, where she could have the opportunity to engage in social and recreational activities. Dolnik moved into the community last year on Memorial Day. “After my husband passed away, I stayed in our home for a few years,” she shared. “We had a six-bedroom, four-bathroom home in West Caldwell and I just wasn’t quite ready to sell it. Finally, one of my daughters said, ‘You need to downsize!’ So I rented a townhome in West Orange for a year, to get a feel for living in a smaller home. I knew about K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at North Caldwell, but I still wasn’t ready to bite the bullet and sell my home. Then my daughter said to me, ‘You know what? This is the place for you. The homes are nice, you’re near your grandchildren and your old neighborhood, and there are lots of activities.’ And she was right. I looked at a few other places, but this was the most appealing.”

Diane Fitzsimmons had a similar desire to be closer to family and to live somewhere that offered a variety of activities for homeowners. “We lived in Verona for 30 years and raised our three kids there,” Fitzsimmons said. “About ten years ago, I retired and moved down to Point Pleasant. I had always wanted a big house with a pool near the beach. Then about a year-and-a-half ago, I decided to move back north, to be closer to my family. I wasn’t seeing my grandchildren as much as I wanted, plus my mother is in Springfield, so I wanted to be closer to her, as well. I looked at a number of places online and went shopping with some realtors. I knew Mary had bought a home at K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at North Caldwell, but I hadn’t really considered it for myself until she said, ‘Why don’t you come see it?’ I had seen a number of other 55+ communities in the area, but as soon as I saw this place, I fell in love with it. Right away I said, ‘This is it, absolutely.’ Nothing else compared.” Fitzsimmons moved into the community four months after her co-mother-in-law, in September 2013.

K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at North Caldwell has attracted many active adults, offering a winning combination of beautiful homes, a variety of social and lifestyle amenities, and an ideal location only 30 miles from New York City. Homes are elegant and low maintenance, with three spacious designs available, all featuring single-level living and ranging in size from 1,957 to 2,428 square feet. Priced from the mid-$500s (prices are subject to change), the homes have flowing layouts with nine-foot-high ceilings, two bedrooms, two full baths, an open living-dining room, eat-in kitchen, family room with a fireplace, and much more. The two mothers-in-law purchased different models, but both were equally quick to express how much they love their new homes.

“It’s just perfect for me,” Mary Dolnik said. “I have a big living room-dining room, a nice deck off the dining room, plenty of storage space downstairs, and a wonderful fireplace. And I feel safe here. I pull into the garage, the door closes behind me. It’s just easy, safe living. I’m really happy with it!” Diane Fitzsimmons expressed similar sentiments. “I never had anything brand-new before,” she shared. “It’s very nicely appointed and so spacious. I feel like I’m in a whole house! My children absolutely love it. They come with the grandchildren every Monday night. All eight of them are here for dinner and it’s just great.”

K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at North Caldwell has a reputation as an extremely social, active community, which also appealed strongly to both ladies. The centerpiece of the community is the clubhouse, a private facility that includes a heated outdoor pool, bocce courts, putting green, tennis court, fitness center, game room and lounge with party kitchen. Homeowners enjoy a variety of social and recreational activities, including a monthly calendar of events that changes regularly.

“It’s very nice,” Fitzsimmons commented about the clubhouse and the amenities. “You can be as social as you want to be, or not, but no one pressures you. I feel very comfortable going by myself to any activity. I go to dinner out on the town with a group once a month – there are usually about 20 to 30 of us. I go to brunches and Wednesday night movies. They had a wonderful Halloween program, with pumpkin painting and a petting zoo for grandchildren. My grandchildren also went with me to a Valentine’s Day brunch, where the kids made cards for their moms. There are all kinds of great activities. And everyone is so friendly. It’s kind of like when you go to Florida – everyone is from somewhere else. It’s a new place for everybody, so everyone wants to talk and to know where you lived, etc.”

Mary Dolnik keeps herself busy, as well. “I’ve done it all!” she said, laughing. “Every activity you can possibly think of! I go to the pool, use the gym, go to the book club, play Bingo. You can be as active as you want to be. If you want to be busy, you can go to the clubhouse every night and there’s something to do. And I like that they include our families in activities, as well.”

So how do the two women find living near each other and socializing together in their new community? Forget that old stereotype about dueling mothers-in-law, they both say. “We’re not at odds!” Dolnik said, laughing. “She’s a friend of mine and it’s nice to have her here. We enjoy getting together socially.” Fitzsimmons agreed, adding, “We are friends and we do socialize together, even more so now that we’re both here. We have holidays together with our families, so it’s really worked out very well. It’s nice that we can all be here together.”

The location of the community was a key factor for both Dolnik and Fitzsimmons. Most importantly, it brings them closer to their families: Dolnik has three of her four children in the area and eight of her 10 grandchildren (with one more on the way); Fitzsimmons has two of her three children and five grandchildren nearby. But the location appealed for other reasons, too. Last year, North Caldwell was named once again by New Jersey Monthly as one of the “Best Places To Live.” The area surrounding the community is rich in upscale shopping, fine dining, recreational activities, parklands, and family activities. “It’s nice, because we’re in a quiet area off of Bloomfield Avenue,” Dolnik said, “but we’re close enough to all the stores and other things we need.”

Both ladies are quick to encourage other active adults to consider K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at North Caldwell, as well. “So many people ask me about it,” Dolnik said. “They know I’m from the area and they want to know what it’s like. I tell them, ‘It’s wonderful. It’s all you need at this stage in your life. Everything you need is here – and it's a very comfortable feeling being here. I feel right at home.” Once again, you’ll find no argument from her co-mother-in-law, who agrees wholeheartedly. “Moving here was easy and painless,” Fitzsimmons said. “Everything went smoothly and everyone is so friendly. I would encourage anyone to move here!”

K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at North Caldwell is now offering its final opportunities, so interested buyers are urged to visit soon, while there are still a few outstanding opportunities available.
