The Missner Group and Baker Development Team Up for a Build-to-Suit in Chicago for First Ascent
(Skokie, Illinois) – The Missner Group, LLC and joint-venture partner, Baker Development Corporation (BDC), are pleased to announce the development of a new, 20,000 square foot fitness facility for First Ascent at 3500 N. Spaulding in Chicago.
“When we purchased the land in 2013, we knew demand in this market was on the rise,” said Barry Missner, president of The Missner Group. “The space is ideally located and provides First Ascent with the opportunity to develop a community-based sporting facility in an otherwise land constrained pocket of the City.”
First Ascent is a local, community-focused climbing gym catering to climbers of all levels throughout Chicago. The new building, constructed by The Missner Group, will feature climbing, yoga and fitness facilities. “From the cash to the concrete, we kept it local. First Ascent gathered a premier team of local investors along with Chicago-based developers, architects, contractors and lenders who believe, just as we do, in the continued growth of our city,” said Jon Shepard, Founder and Business Director of First Ascent. “The First Ascent project resulted from the passion of Chicago’s climbing community and is dedicated to creating a world class climbing facility in Chicago.”
First Ascent Chicago will feature a 60’ high climbing area with Walltopia-designed climbing terrain from Bulgaria; top rope and lead walls with overhangs, roofs, slabs and cracks; 5,000 square feet of stand-alone bouldering with caves, prows and overhangs; and a yoga studio. The Missner Group will also construct a 7,000 square foot mezzanine for a training center with system boards and slacklines as well as a full-body fitness area. The center will also include a café, pro-shop, locker rooms and community spaces.
“This will be a unique facility for the City and we’re pleased to have been selected to develop the project,” said Glen Missner, who will be leading the construction efforts for Missner. “We’ve completed numerous sporting facilities throughout the area including volleyball and soccer centers as well as extreme trampoline facilities. Our experience working on recreation related projects will enable us to provide First Ascent the highest quality construction team for the project”
Executive Vice President, Glen Missner, VP of Construction Drue Stoehr and Superintendent Gary Bertoncini will oversee the construction of the new climbing facility. Fitzgerald Associates is providing the architectural services. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2015.
