New York City, the Big Apple, where more than 52 million visitors are expected to travel to in 2012 has lost its distinction as the most expensive U.S. City for travelers. According to TripAdvsor's TripIndex Cities 2013, the cost comparison of an evening out and overnight stay for two people in popular cities around the world, ranks Honolulu as the most expensive city in the U.S. for travelers. The Big Island in Hawaii, narrowly beat out the Big Apple by a mere 69 cents, Honolulu jumped four spots from last year, becoming more expensive than the Big Apple, Boston and San Francisco, which were the top three priciest cities in 2012. Honolulu at a cost of $504.94 is the most expensive, while Las Vegas offers the most affordable stay at $273.94.

The U.S. cities with the largest increase in summer hotel prices from 2012 to 2013 was led by Orlando with a 33 percent increase, Denver at 32 percent, Honolulu at 29 percent, Los Angeles at 29 percent and Seattle at 26 percent.

The index is based on the combined costs for two for a one night stay in a four-star hotel, cocktails, a two course dinner with a bottle of wine, and round trip taxi transportation (two miles each way). Cost reflects rates from June 1 through August 31st, 2013:

For the third consecutive year, the South is the most affordable region in America, with five of the 10 least expensive TripIndex cities: Miami (No. 2), Dallas (No. 3), Atlanta (No. 4), New Orleans (No. 6) and Houston (No. 7). The average cost of an overnight stay in these cities is $336.44, compared to the national average of $398.95
