Long Island Couple Find Nothing Compares to K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch

05/19/2014

Clifton/Woodland Park, NJ, May 2014: Barbara Shermer and Don Jaclin were ready for a change. While moving from Long Island to New Jersey was not exactly what you would call a “bucket list” goal for the Plainview couple, circumstances led them to start looking for a new home in the Garden State – and to ultimately settle down at K. Hovnanian’sÒFour Seasons at Great Notch Spa and Club, a popular active-adult community in Passaic County. In particular, they wanted to be closer to their children and grandchildren; and they were interested in living in a lifestyle community, which presented a challenge for them on Long Island, as Barbara explained.

“Coming from Long Island, unless you move out towards the Hamptons, you are extremely limited in choice in terms of lifestyle communities,” Shermer said. “It’s very high-priced and extremely congested. With only a few exceptions, they have no real clubhouses. There’s nothing like we found here at K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch. For us, it was a no-brainer from the get-go. We came here to look last September and by the second time we pulled into the gate, Don said, ‘You know what? This feels like home.’ And in so many ways, it does. Not only are we closer to our family, but everyone is so friendly and the location is perfect.”

Shermer and Jaclin aren’t alone in their feeling that nothing compares to K. Hovnanian’s Four Seasons at Great Notch. The community has proven to be one of North Jersey’s most successful active-adult neighborhoods, attracting 55+ buyers from all around New Jersey and the metro New York region, including more than a few from Long Island. Set in a picturesque mountain rock quarryand surrounded by majestic cliffs, with spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline, the community offers an appealing combination of beautifully designed homes in a tranquil setting, with resort-style amenities, and a highly convenient location only 12 miles from New York City.

That combination of factors, combined with proximity to their family, was precisely what won over Shermer and Jaclin, who originally began looking at communities further south in New Jersey. “We started down near Somerset, where we looked at three different communities,” Jaclin shared, “but we realized we needed to be further north.” Shermer laughed, adding, “Our goal was to get closer to our children and grandchildren, but living down there, we would have been as far away as we were on Long Island!” With their children and grandchildren living in Manhattan, Livingston and Rockaway, NJ, it made more sense to be in North Jersey – and when they found K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch online, they were immediately interested.

“It was the layout of the building, the Manhattan view to the east, the beautiful setting. The visual alone was spectacular,” Jaclin said. “Then when we went inside, saw the model and met the sales team, who could not have been better. It was the complete package.” Shermer agreed. “We love it,” she said. “Being set up on a mountain, the visual appeal is really nice. Plus, we’re so close to our family, to Manhattan, to all kinds of stores, the Jersey Shore, and it’s barely an hour to get back to Long Island to see our friends there.”

The resort-like lifestyle offered at K. Hovnanian’s Four Seasons at Great Notch was also appealing to the Long Island couple. A vast array of amenities and activities are available to homeowners, most of which are centered around the magnificent 25,000 square-foot clubhouse. Here, residents enjoy a variety of recreational and social lifestyle opportunities that are simply unsurpassed in the area. The facility includes both indoor and outdoor pools, tennis and bocce courts, a putting green, billiards, card and craft rooms, and a state-of-the-art fitness center. A variety of clubs and other social activities are held in the facility, as well.

“We moved here in January, so we’re only just beginning to avail ourselves of everything that’s available,” Shermer shared. “We went to a meet-and-greet for new homeowners and we met a lot of other couples from New York, including a lot of professionals. Everyone was so friendly and down to earth. And they have everything here! We’ll use the gym, for sure. Don played his first poker game. If you want to learn how to play Mahjong or other games, they’ll teach you. They have art classes I’d like to take, and tennis, golf, hiking, swimming. The indoor pool is fabulous. And they’re very kid-friendly. They have a lot of family events and they always encourage you to bring your grandchildren.” Don concurred, adding, “And they’re always looking for new things to offer. The nice thing is, you can do as much or as little as you want. It’s your choice.”

In addition to the outstanding lifestyle amenities, K. Hovnanian’s Four Seasons at Great Notch offers a variety of luxurious home designs. There are floor plans that appeal to almost every type of active-adult buyer, including attractive villa, garden and courtyard homes, priced from the low-$400s (prices subject to change). Each home is thoughtfully planned, offering from 1,426 to 2,907 square feet of beautifully designed living space, including two or three bedrooms and up to three full baths. Barbara and Don purchased a garden home.

“It’s a totally modern, open-concept home,” Shermer explained. “When my daughter first walked in she said, ‘Wow! It’s so open and so inviting!’ – and that’s exactly what it is. One of our goals was to have a home with no stairs. We came from a four-floor townhome, so as we look toward the future, this will be better. We went from having 1,706 square feet to now having a larger home, with 1,765 square feet. We have two bedrooms, and they’re on opposite ends of a hallway, so you have some separation when you have guests. We have a laundry room, not just a closet with a stackable unit, but an actual laundry room. We have bay windows in two rooms, crown molding throughout, a fireplace, a tray ceiling in the master bedroom. Everything is so open and expansive – and the views are amazing. We look out at Manhattan!”

Don didn’t think having stellar views was all that important. “All I really wanted was to look outside and not see a wall,” he said, laughing. “But when we looked out and saw the spectacular view from this model, we said, ‘That’s it. We’re taking it.’”

No doubt another one of the community’s finest amenities is its location. K. Hovnanian’s Four Seasons at Great Notch is privately tucked away and nicely removed from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Yet, at the same time, the community is within easy reach of major highways, such as Routes 3 and 46, Interstate 80, the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike. Nearby fine dining, lush parks and boutique shopping options also abound. There is even a bus stop right at the entrance of the community, providing direct access to Port Authority. “We are literally minutes away from a number of major roads,” Shermer commented. “Manhattan is only about twenty minutes away. We have Montclair and Upper Montclair at our doorstep, which are loaded with restaurants. There is ample shopping nearby – not to mention that we have no taxes here on clothing, plus gas is less than what we were paying on Long Island!”

Barbara and Don were also pleased with the experience of working with the sales team at K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch. “They were extremely accommodating and Jane could not have been better,” Don commented. “Every step of the way, she would get back to us and everything moved smoothly.” Barbara agreed, adding, “She had the patience of a saint, and that beautiful smile. You knew, if you had a question, she would get to the source of it. And there was no pressure, which was fabulous.”

Even though they’ve only been living at K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Great Notch for a few months now, Barbara Shermer and Don Jaclin are feeling right at home. “We’ve had our children and grandchildren here and it’s not a drudge anymore for them to visit,” Shermer said. “It’s so easy to get to and now we see them almost weekly, instead of once a month or two.” Don summed it up nicely. “We knew we were going to love it here,” he reflected. “Everybody we had talked to who lived here, had all said the same thing: ‘We absolutely love living here.’ And now, we do, too.”

Visit K. Hovnanian’s Four Seasons at Great Notch, take a tour of the beautifully decorated model homes and the clubhouse – and see why more and more active-adult buyers are making the move to this one-of-a-kind community.
