Hopatcong Couple Find Exactly What They Were Looking for at K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Harbor Bay
Little Egg Harbor, NJ, December 2014: There are certain points in life when the signs are clear, and you just know it’s time to move on. Linda and Lee Blackwell arrived at one of those points a couple of years ago. The Blackwells were living in Lake Hopatcong, NJ, and soon after they retired, they began to recognize that it was time for a change. “Everybody was gone!” Lee explained, laughing. “Our kids had moved on, our friends had moved on. We had lived there for 41 years and we realized that if we stayed there, we would just end up sitting in our house up there on the hill. We wanted to meet more people and enjoy a better social life.”
Flash-forward a couple of years and it’s a whole different picture for the Blackwells. “I’m at the pool every day,” Lee says. “Now I tell people, ‘I’m retired, but I’m still working – now I’m just working on my tan.’ We found everything we were looking for: a place where we can meet people, get involved and be active. It’s fabulous.”
What the Blackwells found, as many other active-adults from throughout New Jersey and the metro New York area have discovered, was K. Hovnanian’sÒ Four Seasons at Harbor Bay. Located just fifteen minutes from Long Beach Island in Ocean County’s Little Egg Harbor, this popular gated 55+ community offers an active, resort-like lifestyle near the Jersey Shore and close to the excitement of Atlantic City.
Linda Blackwell explained how they made the decision to move to K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Harbor Bay. “We definitely wanted to stay on the east coast,” she shared. “Most of my family is in New Jersey, we really like the shore, and we wanted to avoid snow! So we decided to move further south in the state. We visited at least five or six different adult communities, including another K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons community in Jackson. When we stopped in the first time, the sales office was closed, but we walked around and asked some people how they liked it. Everybody really liked living there so we came back to visit again, but found out there were no more new homes available. They suggested that we visit Harbor Bay, where there were new homes available. So we came down and looked. We really liked the models, we liked all the activities they offered, and we loved the pool and the clubhouse.” The Blackwells moved to the community in August 2013 and, as Lee shared, “We’ve been very, very happy.”
One of the most appealing features of K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Harbor Bay is its variety of recreational and social amenities. The heart of the neighborhood – and the site for many of the community’s activities and events – is the magnificent two-story Clubhouse and Recreation Center. This 16,000 square-foot, seashore-inspired facility features indoor and outdoor pools, sun decks, a fitness center, spa, billiards and craft rooms, tennis, bocce, horseshoes and more. The facility was voted “Clubhouse of the Year”in 2011 by the New Jersey Shore Builder's Association.
“We love the clubhouse,” Lee commented. “It’s exactly what we were looking for – a place where we can get as involved as much as we want. I’m playing bocce now, which I’ve never played before. I’m also on the social committee. We’re very active, but you can do as much as you want, or not get involved, if you choose. I’m also an ambassador for the community, so when people come in to look at the clubhouse, I show them around and tell them how great it is. When I’m at the pool, I’ll go up and talk to new people. Everyone says, ‘Go talk to Lee, he knows everyone and everything about the community. He’s like the mayor around the pool!’”
Linda was equally quick to rave about the social amenities at their community. “There are a lot of activities and social events we enjoy,” she shared. “I joined the women’s club, play rummikub, and I started playing bocce. I joined the book club but haven’t gone yet and I want to learn to play Mahjongg. We have two boys, one in Massachusetts and one in New Mexico, and five grandchildren. They’ve all been here and they love visiting! Between the beach and the pool and all the activities, our grandchildren said, ‘There’s so much for you and us to do!’ And our one daughter-in-law was so impressed with how clean the neighborhood is, even though there was still construction going on. She called it ‘Pleasantville’ – and I have to say, it is! Everyone is so friendly! We made friends right away.”
As much as they enjoy the social aspect of their new community, Linda and Lee Blackwell also love their new home. The private, gated community offers a choice of six distinct home designs, nicely priced from the high-$200s (prices are subject to change). The single-level homes feature up to 2,900 square feet of living space, with up to three bedrooms, three baths, and attached two-car garages. Many buyers also appreciate the taxes, which are substantially lower than active-adult communities in other parts of the state or in New York.
The Blackwells chose a Monterey model, which was ideally suited for them. “We really liked the open floor plan,” Linda said. “In our other house, we had the family room downstairs, so when you had company, you couldn’t socialize all that well. Here, everything is on one floor, which we really nice – we didn’t want stairs anymore. And we have the open dining room, which makes it easy to serve and still be able to socialize and talk to people.”
Quietly located amidst the natural beauty of Great Bay, Little Egg Harbor offers the ideal setting for such a lovely community. Conveniently located near some of the Jersey Shore’s best beaches, K. Hovnanian’sÒ Four Seasons at Harbor Bay is tucked away from all the hustle and bustle, yet remarkably close to the Garden State Parkway and other major highways. The community offers easy access to plenty of outstanding dining, entertainment and shopping choices. The Sea Oaks Golf Club, a championship 18-hole public golf course, is adjacent to the community. Boating, fishing, great marinas, historic lighthouses, sun-drenched beaches – all of these wonderful amenities are just minutes away. And, as Lee Blackwell is quick to point out, the area is much less congested than what they were used to in North Jersey.
“I worked in sales and used to commute a lot,” he recalled. “It was getting very congested up north. It takes a lot to get around in those areas, with all the traffic. When we came down to Little Egg Harbor, we were pleased to find it was so much less congested. It’s so much easier to get around.”
The Blackwells have been pleased with every aspect of their move, including the process of buying their new home. “Everything went very smoothly,” Linda shared. “Bill Kurtz was great to work with. Anytime we had questions, we would call and he would provide answers.” The couple also went through K. Hovnanian® American Mortgage, L.L.C.TM for their financing, which Linda said “was a very easy process.”
If the Blackwells sound like cheerleaders for their new community, they are. “We highly recommend this place to anyone who’s interested in a 55+ community,” Lee said. “This is where you should come, as I’ve told some of my friends.” Linda echoed those sentiments, adding, “We love it here. Our home is so well built, it’s such a friendly community with so much to do. It’s a great place to buy! In fact, my sister is already considering it when they’re ready.”

Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Harbor Bay, walk through the community’s beautifully decorated model homes, tour the impressive Clubhouse – and see why this premier active-adult community has become a “destination” neighborhood for so many buyers like the Blackwells. The community is open daily from 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. For directions or more information about the community, call (609) 296-5301; or visit www.khov.com/HarborBay.
