The Hampshire Companies Embrace Community Outreach Projects in 2013
Morristown, N.J. (March 4, 2014) – The Hampshire Companies, a full service, private real estate firm based in Morristown, N.J., took part in several service projects during 2013 in an effort to help foster a spirit of goodwill in the local community. The Hampshire Companies is a Responsible Property Investor who make environmental and social sustainability an important link in their regular practices. Through participation in programs such as Operation Holiday, the Interfaith Food Pantry and “Grow it Green Morristown,” Hampshire employees strived to give back to their fellow neighbors and generate positive momentum in the community heading into the New Year.
Operation Holiday is a gift-giving campaign sponsored by the Women’s Club of Morristown and The Daily Record that serves to benefit Morris County residents who find themselves in need during the holiday season. Information from the families registered for the drive was gathered and their holiday “wish lists” were passed on to volunteers and contributors. Hampshire made sure that none of the wishes from the 2013 campaign went unanswered, with each of its contributing employees carefully shopping to make sure that each item on every list was purchased. The gifts were then wrapped before being picked up by volunteers for special delivery to the participating families. The event was an experience filled with the genuine spirit of the holiday season for Hampshire and one that it plans on repeating for many years to come.
The Interfaith Food Pantry was established in 1994 by a group of local organizations concerned with combating hunger in the Morris County area. The consolidated effort by this newly formed coalition resulted in a Morristown distribution center, from which the non-denominational group began leading the fight against growing hunger problems plaguing families and, unbeknownst to many, senior citizens. The Pantry currently distributes more than 1,500 pounds of food to families in need each week and Hampshire has long supported these efforts. During the months of November and December 2013, The Hampshire Companies held a company-wide Holiday Food Drive where employees donated essential items on the Pantry’s list including: low-salt soups, peanut butter, breakfast foods, canned (low salt) vegetables, pasta items, baby food and canned milk products. In less than two months, Hampshire collected almost 350 pounds of necessities for the Pantry, which helped to feed eight families for an entire week.
“Grow it Green Morristown” is a not-for-profit organization with the goal of building a strong sense of community and stewardship through the use of collaborative projects centered around food, education and shared outdoor spaces. In addition to cultivating a strong and healthy community, the goal of the organization is to bring people together through learning about the art and science of growing food. “Grow it Green” presently operates two sites in Morristown. One, “The Urban Farm at Lafayette,” is located at the Lafayette Learning Center on Hazel Street. The other, named “The Early Street Grow it Green Community Garden,” is located on Early Street. In 2013 The Hampshire Companies had a strong presence behind the “Grow it Green” effort, donating the seed money to create The Hampshire Learning Garden at the Lafayette site. The Hampshire Learning Garden comprises about 25 percent of the total farming area and will grow vegetables, flowers and other native plants. This effort will assist in bringing the community together by promoting healthy living practices as well as celebrating the passion involved in agricultural cultivation.
Inspired by their involvement in “Grow it Green”, The Hampshire Companies is currently planning an “outpost” garden consisting of approximately 600 square feet, which will be planted outside of its 83 South Street address this year. The plot of land, which stretches between 83 South Street and the Morristown Library, will serve not only to provide another learning garden for the community, but will also play a part in boosting community awareness for the “Grow it Green” efforts that are already in place. In addition, Hampshire employees will volunteer their time in the spring to help prepare the “Grow it Green” farmers for another year. The produce from all of these efforts will be donated to the District and local area food banks.
While 2013 was a great year for Hampshire in terms of giving back, the feelings of mutual trust and generosity instilled by their efforts will only contribute to the formation of a stronger communal foundation to build upon moving forward.
