From Bayonne to Barnegat to the Good Life at K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Harbor Bay
Little Egg Harbor, NJ, September 2014: When it came to their retirement living, Jan and Chuck Subelka took a two-phase approach. Phase 1 happened a few years ago, when the Bayonne couple moved to Barnegat. “We had a place in Barnegat that was originally our summer home, which we remodeled and chose to be our first retirement home,” Jan explained. “But then we reached a point where we wanted to downsize from there, too. It was a large house on the lagoon and it just got to be too much. We were ready to stop mowing and shoveling snow and to be done with all the yard work. So we started to think about K. Hovnanian’s®Four Seasons at Harbor Bay.”
The Subelkas were familiar with the popular active-adult community in Little Egg Harbor, thanks to some friends who had moved there previously. “I’m a retired teacher from Bayonne and one of my teacher friends and her husband had bought a home here,” Jan continued. “So we would come down to visit from time to time and every time we visited, we always loved their home and enjoyed being here so much. Also, our son and daughter-in-law had moved to Little Egg Harbor and they had a baby last November, our first grandchild, so we wanted to be closer to them, as well.”
Located just fifteen minutes from Long Beach Island and close to the excitement of Atlantic City, K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Harbor Bay has a history of attracting residents from throughout New Jersey and the metro New York area – people who, like the Subelkas, are ready to trade in all the cares of maintaining a home for a carefree, resort-like lifestyle near the Jersey Shore. Quietly located amidst the natural beauty of Great Bay, the private, gated community offers a choice of six distinct home designs, nicely priced from the high-$200s (prices are subject to change). The single-level homes feature up to 2,900 square feet of living space, with up to three bedrooms, three baths, and attached two-car garages. Many buyers also appreciate the taxes, which are substantially lower than active-adult communities in other parts of the state, Staten Island, or New York.
It was this combination of factors that appealed to the Subelkas. “We just loved it – everything about it was very positive,” Jan commented. “We looked at a few other places, but some of them were just too big. This was the perfect size community for us. We loved the area. It’s an ideal location – very convenient to so much. We’re not that far from New York City, but also close to Atlantic City, which was a big plus for us! We also liked the fact that there were different styles of houses in the neighborhood. And we liked the topography of the community – it was nice and hilly. And of course, we’re now only ten minutes from our grandson, so we’re thrilled about that!”
The Subelkas moved into the community this past May. “We had looked around at the different models and we really liked the Amelia,” Jan shared. “We liked the fact that it’s very open, it was very easy to decorate, it’s light and airy. It was just what we were looking for and we love it. When our son and daughter-in-law came in for the first time, they were just amazed. “First of all, they’re pleased that we live closer to them now. But they loved the home, too. My daughter-in-law is a pastry chef, so she really appreciated the gourmet kitchen. We have a double oven, which is just beautiful, and a large bar. They loved it.”
Little Egg Harbor is an ideal setting for such a lovely community. Ideally located near some of the Jersey Shore’s most famous beaches, K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Harbor Bay is tucked away from all the hustle and bustle, yet remarkably close to the Garden State Parkway and other major highways. The community offers easy access to plenty of outstanding dining, entertainment and shopping choices. The Sea Oaks Golf Club, a championship 18-hole public golf course, is adjacent to the community. Boating, fishing, great marinas, historic lighthouses, sun-drenched beaches – all of these wonderful amenities are just minutes away.
Of course, one of the community’s most appealing aspects is its array of recreational and social amenities. The heart of the neighborhood – and the site for many of the community’s activities and events – is the magnificent two-story Clubhouse and Recreation Center. This 16,000 square-foot, seashore-inspired facility features indoor and outdoor pools, sun decks, a fitness center, spa, billiards and craft rooms, tennis, bocce, horseshoes and more. The facility was voted “Clubhouse of the Year” in 2011 by the New Jersey Shore Builder's Association.
“We love the clubhouse,” Jan said. “Especially the fitness room. We both use the treadmill. It’s so convenient. And the pool – what’s not to love about it? It’s like a resort pool. We’ve been spending a lot of time unpacking, so we’ll do a few boxes and then look at each other and say, ‘That’s enough. Let’s go to the pool!’ Plus, there’s an indoor pool, too, so we can use it all winter!”
Having moved in just a few months ago, Jan and Chuck are still in the process of unpacking and settling in, so they haven’t had a lot of time to participate in many community activities yet. But that will change soon. “We’ve been to a few activities, like barbeques by the pool,” Jan shared. “But come fall, we’ve already picked out everything we want to do. I’m going to join the biking club and the women’s club. I’ve already been to one meeting and loved it! Chuck is going to do bocce, horseshoes, and fishing. And we’re both joining the photography club. The nice thing is, you can join as many clubs or do as many activities as you want, or not. Of you don’t want to, that’s fine, too. There’s no pressure.”
Even though they haven’t yet been fully involved in activities, the Subelkas quickly discovered what a friendly community K. Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Harbor Bay is. “At every affair or activity we have gone to, everyone made us feel so welcome,” Jan said. “We’ve met a lot of people and everyone is extremely friendly. At the pool or at any activity, people will just come over and introduce themselves. We’ve already made some new friends.”
That friendly, welcoming spirit was not just limited to their neighbors. As Jan explains, the K. Hovnanian® team was equally warm. “Everyone along the way was very helpful and very pleasant,” she said. “Joan Duckers is a terrific lady – very knowledgeable and she never put any pressure on us to buy. She made such a good impression on us. She’s just a sweetheart. Everyone made it tremendously easy for us, from here in the sales center to the Design Center. Doug Gilbert, the manager here – he is so good and does a great job. Anything you ever need, he’s on it immediately. This was the first time we ever had a house built from the ground up, so I was a little apprehensive at first. And all along the way, I just kept saying, ‘I can’t believe how nicely this is going along.’ The whole process was just a very positive experience and everyone was so accommodating. We couldn’t be happier.”

Hovnanian’s® Four Seasons at Harbor Bay, walk through the community’s beautifully decorated model homes, tour the impressive Clubhouse – and see why this premier active-adult community has become a “destination” neighborhood for so many buyers like the Subelkas.“We made the right move,” Jan Subelka said with confidence. “We often have friends come over, many who are also retired, and they are all amazed at our house. Time and again, they tell us, ‘We wish we had this. Boy, you did the right thing!’ That makes us feel good.”
